Photographer #042: David Burdeny

David Burdeny, Canada, 1968, is an award winning photographer. He is well known for his black and white photographs of landscapes taken in near dark situations. Due to the long exposures the images show something not able to be seen by the normal eye. Burdeny has no degree in photography, but a background in architecture and interior design.

In 2007 he made an impressive series on Greenland and Antarctica.

Photographer #041: Brian Smith

Brian Smith, USA, 1959, is most known for his celebrity portrait photography. When looking at his collection we see a vast number of Hollywood stars portrayed by Smith. Recently he has been working on a project called Art & Soul. Portraits of celebrities with personal notes on how exposure to arts positively impacted their lives. These photographs will be collected in a coffee table book and was already presented to the White House to lobby for more funding for the arts and art education.

Photographer #040: Simen Johan

Simen Johan, Norway, 1973, makes photographs consisting of many layers of images. These photographs really impress once seen in real size because there are many things to be discovered in them. For instance, the fox in the image below is crying tears. All of the animals in the series Until the Kingdom comes show some kind of human behaviour.

Photographer #039: Taisuke Koyama

Japanese photographer Taisuke Koyama, 1978, zooms in on the city of Tokyo. With his macro lens he makes photographs of organic abstractions. The images may look like graphic objects at first glance, but when one looks closer you will see overlooked transformations of the city. These photographs come from the series Entropix that he is still working on today, but was also released as a publication in 2008.

Currently he is working on a series called Rainbow Form. He states: "At a glance, these photographs look like graphic design due to its flatness. On the contrary, In reality, this image is composed with more layers; printing dots that compose a image of rainbow, dust of paper, surface condensation, scratch and adheres on the invisible plastic board which exists in the front of the paper, and the shadows on the paper caused by those."

Photographer #038: Vanessa Winship

Vanessa Winship, Great-Britain, 1960, is a documentary photographer. In her series Sweet Nothings she has been taking photographs of schoolgirls from the borderlands of Eastern Anatolia. She continues to take all photographs in the same way; frontal and with enough distance to capture them from head to toe and still include the surroundings.

Winship now lives in Turkey and focuses on stories on countries around the black sea. The following photographs come from the series Imagened States and Desires: A Balkan Journey 1.

Mika Ninagawa, Japan, 1972, is a very productive photographer. Her images are full of colour and still have a direct link to the ancient arts of Japan. She has been exhibited all over the world and she been published in 35 books in the last 13 years. The following pictures come from the series Flowers and Fashion & Portraits.

French photographer Valerie Belin, 1964, clearly works in series. These series are very organised. Like a sculptor, working on the final image through use of light and contrast, she carefully makes her photographs. She lives and works in Paris. Photographer #035: Nadav Kander

Nadav Kander, Israel, 1961, lives and works in London. He is a photographer with a vast amount of projects behind his name. In a three year period he has gone upstream the Yangtze River in China documenting the development and economic rise of China and it's concequences. He was awarded the Prix Pictet in 2009 for this series.

Nadav has also photographed the entire administration of Barack Obama. The New York Times published the photographs, making it the largest collection of photographs ever published in the Times by one single photographer.

Ma Liang, better known as Maleonn, 1972, is a Chinese photographer. His photography can best be defined as theatrical and fantastical. He has gotten international acclaim for the images made with props, actors and fable like sets. The following pictures come from the series: White on White, Little Flagman and Leaves of Grass.

Olivier Valsecchi, 1979, France, is specialized in portraiture and photographing nudes, but the most attention he has recently gotten is with his series Dust. Nude males and females covered in white powder in awkward positions. This series was recently published in the spring issue of 2010 of magazine Eyemazing.

Photographer #032: Levi van Veluw

Dutch photographer Levi van Veluw, 1985, finished the Artez institute of the arts in Arnhem, NL in 2007. Since then he has had numerous publications and exhibitions around the world. He often photographs his own head, but not as a normal self-portrait. He uses different materials to experiment. These experiments result in amazing images as seen below. The following images come from the series Landscapes, Light and Natural Transfers.

Austrian photographer Alexandra Hager, 1971, often takes pictures with victorian clothing but with a twist. She uses bizarre backgrounds and modern techniques to get the final result. The people in her photographs appear like dolls giving it a haunting fairy tale look. These photo's come from various series.

Photographer #030: Benjamin Lowy

Benjamin Lowy, 1979, USA, is a photojournalist, but he works different than most journalists. Benjamin has been in various places, ranging from Darfur to Iraq and from Afghanistan to Las Vegas. On his website you can see how vast his portfolio is and how high the level of quality stays. He often takes pictures from the same point of view and thus creating a series. This is visible in the two series from Iraq called Perspectives.

In several countries he has made photographs that he calls storyboards. They consist of multiple photographs put together.

On and between his travels he has recently started to shoot pictures with his Iphone. The results are little pieces of art. Look at the series called VIDI: [w-d]: I SAW.

German photographer Rainer Elstermann, 1965, approaches his photographs as if they were paintings. He is clearly inspired by the great painters. The lighting he uses is immaculate. In his series Old Masters he even recreated several icon paintings into photographs. The photographs below are from various series.

Elinor Carucci, 1971, is a photographer from Israel. She photographs her own life. She pays attention to details and makes the audience into a voyeur of her life. The photographs can at some points be confronting and uncomforting as there is no shame in them. The photographs are very recognizable from anyone's life and have a poetic feel to them. The following pictures are from the series: Closer, Crisis and from her latest project about her children.
