Photographer #318: Nicholas Alan Cope

Nicholas Alan Cope, 1983, USA, is a photographer who focuses on product, architectural and still-life photography. He graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. His work began by focusing on the essential components of LA architecture, creating a set of parameters for photographing the city. Then he moved on to capturing the landscape of LA. Both projects combined formed an idealized survey of the city. The visual language created in these bodies of work is clearly visible in his other works. However, in some bodies of work it is a reaction in opposition to them. Works as Paper or Lipstick contain strong and edgy forms, whilst his still-lifes are much more organic and remind us of the great painters. Within the variety Nicholas states that his aim is always "to present the subject directly and maintain visual clarity". The following images come from the series Paper, Abstract II and Architecture II.

Photographer #317: Matt Eich

Matt Eich, 1986, USA, is a young documentary photographer based in Virginia and one of the founding members of Luceo Images. He is currently working on a series in Baptist Town where he started to document the "black" neighbourhood and is planning to do the same in the "white" region. His goal with this series is to remind people that even though civil rights are taught in history classes around the US, the legacies of racism continue to impact the people economically and culturally. In his series Carry Me Ohio, Matt documents the poor communities in Southeast Ohio, a region that once thrived on its mining industry, and how they attempt to recover economically. In recent years Matt has been in numerous group exhibitions and several solo exhibitions. The following images come from the series Sin and Salvation in Baptist Town, An Altered State of Being and Carry Me Ohio.

Photographer #316: Kathryn Parker Almanas

Kathryn Parker Almanas, 1981, USA, is a conceptual fine art photographer who also focuses on making collages. She received a BFA at the Massachusetts College of Art and an MFA at Yale University School of Art. Inspired by a personal experience with bodily illness, her work deals with the universal themes of corporeal existence, anxieties and phobias connected to the world of medicine. In her series Pre-Existing Condition she uses food as a stand-in for the body and its organs. Pastry, jellies and fruit juices become flesh and blood, creating abstract images of "the parts of ourselves both essential to our survival and responsible for our death." In her earlier series Pastry Anatomy she "treated" various pastries as a surgeon or lab would. Her work has been exhibited throughout the USA. The following images come from the series Pre-Existing Condition, Spellato and Medical Interior.

Photographer #315: Marcus Hausser

Marcus Hausser, 1975, Brazil, is a commercial photographer with a long list of clients for whom he has shot campaigns. His career started by assisting renowned advertising photographers in Brazil. In 2002 he launched himself as a freelance photographer, opening a large studio in São Paulo. Amongst his clients are large names as Fiat, Harley Davidson, Sky, Unicef and Fedex. He has been published in editions of the Lürzers Archive 200 best ad photographers worldwide 2008/2009 with four works. His ads range from including a lot of humour to very serious matters. The following images come from the campaigns for ADESF, Abramet and Amnesty International Argentina.

Photographer #314: Arnau Blanch Vilageliu

Arnau Blanch Vilageliu, 1983, is a Spanish documentary photographer who lives and works between Spain and Colombia. He studied photography at the Institut d'Estudis Fotografics de Catalunya. He completed a six month internship at WpN in New York and participated at two workshops at ICP in documentary photography. In his hometown Barcelona he delved into the world of sex. It is a search for human identity, exploring a range of people who's lives are dominated by sex. In gritty and dark images he shows us people who might use sex as a way of expression and others who need it as a means of survival. Shadows of Paradise is made in Colombia. Arnau shows us the darkness in a place that might, due to the lucious color of the jungle, look like a paradise at first glance. Arnau's narrative photography is raw and instinctive.
